Never Again? The Silent Holocaust Claiming 300,000 British Lives

Yesterday, the UK paused for Holocaust Memorial Day, marked by a deeply moving national tribute led by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. London took centre stage in this public commemoration, serving as a solemn reminder of the darkness that falls when humanity loses its way.

The visual impact was most striking at 8pm, when the bustling energy of Piccadilly Circus was transformed into a moment of silent reflection. Six giant, flickering 3D candles were displayed across the renowned Piccadilly Lights, casting a somber glow over the heart of the capital. Each of these candles represented a million souls - a total of six million Jewish men, women, and children - who were systematically extinguished in the holocaust  by a regime that decided some lives were "unworthy of life." Earlier in the day, the King and Queen lit a candle at Buckingham Palace.

As we looked at those digital flames, the message was clear: we must never forget the consequences of devaluing human life.

We use the phrase "Never Again" with such conviction. We look back at the 1940s with a mixture of horror and moral superiority, certain that we would never allow such state-sanctioned slaughter to happen on our watch. Our politicians, from the Tories to Reform, stand side-by-side at memorials, their faces etched with grief for a tragedy safely tucked away in the history books.

But as the echoes of the Last Post fade, a chilling reality remains. While we commemorate a past Holocaust, we are ignoring a present one. While we mourn the victims of yesterday, we are funding the massacre of tomorrow.

The Record-Breaking Slaughter: 299,614 Lives Lost

In the last couple of weeks, while the media was preoccupied with PMQs, the latest fallout from China, and the weather warnings of Storm Chandra, a set of statistics was released that should have stopped the heart of the nation.

According to the latest data from the Department of Health and Social Care, a staggering 299,614 lives were lost to abortion in 2023 across the UK. This isn't just a number; it is a record-breaking tragedy. It represents a 10.56% increase in England and Wales alone.

Let that sink in. Nearly 300,000 human beings - unique, unrepeatable, and innocent - were denied the right to draw their first breath. Even tech mogul Elon Musk recently expressed his shock at the state of our nation, commenting on the horrifying reality that almost 1 in 3 British babies are now killed in the womb. When the secular world’s most famous innovators start sounding the alarm on our "demographic cliff" and the devaluation of life, why is our government still asleep at the wheel?

From Minneapolis to the Womb: A Deadly Double Standard

The world is currently gripped by a peculiar kind of selective outrage. We see it in the headlines every day. Over the weekend, the tragic death of a protester, Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis sparked statewide riots and wall to wall media coverage and political soul-searching.

We are a society that cries out for justice when one life is taken in a perceived injustice on our streets, yet we remain silent while 1.4 million babies are killed in the womb every week across the world.

How can we claim to be a "progressive" society when our "healthcare" system has become a conveyor belt for death? We are currently seeing a push in Parliament for decriminalisation up to birth; a move that would make the UK one of the most dangerous places in the world to be an unborn child. Abortion (if self induced by a mother) will become legal up to birth for any reason in the UK if clause 191 of the Crime Bill passes in The Lords next month. Even for reasons like sex selection. Will the UK join the ranks of countries like India and China who have aborted tens of millions of baby girls, just because they are girls. Will we add to the more than 142 million missing women and girls the world over?

The New Eugenics

The Holocaust didn't start with gas chambers; it started with the dehumanisation of a group of people. It started with the legal definition of "personhood" being stripped away. As did slavery.

Today, we see the same patterns. SPUC and Right To Life have highlighted the devastating rise in disability-selective abortions. In 2023, there were 735 babies aborted simply because they had Down’s syndrome. We are quite literally "weeding out" those we deem imperfect. If we truly meant "Never Again," we would be horrified that our laws allow a baby to be aborted up to the very moment of birth if they are found to have a cleft lip or a club foot.

A Call to Action

As the political landscape shifts and parties like Reform challenge the status quo, we must ask: who will stand up for the most vulnerable? While the news cycle moves on to the next political scandal or the latest update on China, the silent Holocaust continues in clinical rooms and through "pills by post" across our country.

We cannot continue to lay wreaths for the victims of the 1940s while ignoring the 300,000 victims of 2023. Justice isn't just for those who have a voice to scream; it is, most importantly, for those who cannot scream at all.

It is time to end the double standard. It is time to recognise that every life, from conception to natural death, carries an inherent dignity that no government or "choice" can ever take away.

If we want to truly honour the memory of those lost in the Holocaust, we must start by protecting the lives being lost today.
